Elyn sought relief in the martial forms she’d been taught as a child. If she’d been of a mind to reflect on the decision, she might have found it odd, but she needed to move, needed to not think, for thinking only led in circles that spiraled quickly into doubt and then despair.

She couldn’t put her finger on what, exactly, bothered her so much about the knowledge she had gained in the hall. Nothing about the distant past changed any of what mattered now. Void wasn’t the force she thought it was, but it was still a force of unbelievable power. Knowing its origin did nothing to change what it was capable of or what its goals were.

She punched at her imagined opponent, then spun on the ball of her left foot and lashed out with her right. She imagined fighting Father, but the thought brought her no joy. When she replaced Father with Bael, she was reminded of the last time they’d fought and his undeserved mercy.

She swore and kicked at the ghost of him, but even in her imagination he wouldn’t fight back. She punched at him anyway, but none of her attacks brought her closer to a decision.

Elyn swore again. What decision? She’d lost the right to choose her future when she’d pledged her loyalty to Void. When she’d killed adanists for Void. All that was left was obedience, the peace that came from surrendering to a higher power.

Except it wasn’t a higher power, at least, not as she’d once thought of it. It was a woman from a tortured world who’d given birth to the ultimate destructive force, and Elyn had no desire to obey someone who’d once been a mere mortal.

Small stones crunched behind her, and Elyn twirled around to find Void’s head emissary standing there, face severe. “You’ve been given the greatest gift in all the worlds, and you kick and punch like a mere child?”

Elyn would have thrown a punch at the emissary if she wasn’t convinced the woman hoped for just such an outcome. She didn’t bother bowing, heedless of the risks she ran. “What do you want?”

The emissary scowled and Elyn prepared for a beating, but it never came.

“You entered the halls of our master without permission. Servants have been killed for less.”

The threat on her life lacked any punch. “Then why am I still alive?”

“Because our master needs you. I am here to address your behavior and your doubts.”

The emissary sounded as though she’d rather be sticking needles into her arm.

Freed from the fear for her own life, Elyn spoke without worry for the first time since her emissary had died. “Why do you hate me?”

“Because you’re weak. You’ve been given the gift of void, a gift you’re proficient with. You could easily rise to the rank of emissary, but you barely qualify as a servant. Your will is pathetic.”

“It was strong enough to destroy my own father.”

The emissary waved her hand dismissively. “And that, right there, is the source of your weakness.
